How do I clear my browser cache?

All browsers not only show you information from visited sites, but also save it on your computer or mobile phone. It is often read in various technical guides that you need to delete the cache of your mobile phone or computer browser in order to fix the error or improve performance. Many people simply follow the instructions in the manual without knowing what the cache is and why it needs to be cleared.

Below we have tried to reveal the features of using and deleting the cache and explain what is behind this ubiquitous term.

What is browser cache?

Today, the concept of a browser cache most often means a temporary storage for information from web resources, loaded when surfing the Internet. When visiting any resource, all its parts and content (for example, text, images, CSS style files or JavaScript scripts) are transferred from the network to the computer and stored on the user's hard drive.

If after a while you go to the same resource again, you no longer have to download all parts of the visited page again. Instead, the browser can access the cached file from the hard drive and display all the elements of the resource faster.

However, sometimes the browser does not notice that there is newer content on the server. Instead, it shows stale content from the cache. Then the user must enter the program and manually clear the buffer memory. The process is somewhat different in different types of both desktop and mobile surfing applications.

What is Cached Data?

Cache is a definition of a special type of memory most used in IT and networking. It provides optimal access to slow background environments without wasting CPU time and machine resources, and acts like fast-access intermediate buffer memory.

The very concept of "cash" is borrowed from the French, its linguistic meaning means "cache". It is believed that it is so named because the data is always hidden from the user. Most often, the term "cache" is used in relation to Internet browsers. But some physical devices of a computer and any stand-alone software, for example, desktop applications, also have buffer memory.

It is generally used to save machine time. However, in the era of fixed rates on the internet, cash no longer saves money. Time is saved only on legacy computers with narrow traffic channels and low bandwidth.

What happens when you clear the cache?

During installation, each browser creates a "cache" folder and enters there all the technical information about the resources visited during your Internet surfing. They are stored there permanently and implemented as needed when reconnecting.

The browser accesses this folder before clearing the cache – that is, to the reserved data store on the hard disk, which stores information about the resources visited. Then it compares the parameters entered by the user or set by default and erases the records.

These records are permanently erased from the hard drive or hard drive of the mobile device and cannot be restored. If you visit the resource again, the browser will download the entire pages and create a new record for each one.

Why do I need to regularly clear the cache?

Buffer memory must be flushed at regular intervals for several reasons. Depending on your settings and activity, after a month or two of active surfing, it becomes quite voluminous and clogs up a significant amount of permanent memory on your computer. It depends on the content of the visited sites - the size of one entry can range from 20-30 Kb to a whole megabyte.

The more information is stored in the cache, the slower your computer will be. Clearing the cache fixes accumulated errors and your PC's surfing performance increases.

If the browser does not load the new version correctly, even though the resource has been updated since the last cache, the outdated cache sometimes causes structural errors when displayed. The resource pages then appear as if they are not fully loaded or poorly formatted. In this case, you may never see new information posted on the resources when you visit.

If the cache has been deleted (cleared), the browser downloads the most recent current version of the corresponding resource.

You should also remember that clearing your browsing data increases your privacy. If you want to erase your traces of being on a resource on the global web, you must regularly clear the cache.

In addition to manually erasing entries in the browser directly, you can use special programs that do the deletion for you. For example, the CCleaner desktop software is very convenient. This multifunctional program cleans the cache well, and is able to delete all other unnecessary data and programs that are no longer required, as well as clean the registry and fix errors in it.

In the settings of the Cleaner, you can specify several parameters, and select which sections and records will be deleted.

How to clear cache on desktop computers

When using ordinary computers with a large amount of memory, problems with excess cache do not appear immediately. You can visit thousands of resources for several months before you notice that something is wrong. The cleaning process looks different for different stationary desktop surfing applications. Below you will learn how to implement it on personal machines.

Modern browsers allow you to open many tabs at the same time and it's convenient to use them, so we don't keep track of the number of visited resources. However, after hundreds of loaded pages, the usability is significantly reduced.

Remember – timely clearing of cookies, downloaded elements and content, and especially control over the memory occupied by them, significantly improves surfing the network and does not allow your mobile or stationary devices to be clogged with unnecessary information.

It is possible that your browser cache contains outdated data that is causing errors or preventing the download of new files with new content and functionality from the website server. Clearing the memory buffer ensures that all resource files are updated the next time they visit and display the latest information.
